| NWDSBackupObject/NWDSRestoreObject obsolete? |

Hi,
A long time ago i wrote a Windows tool to backup and restore eDirectory to a
file. I use this tool for years now, especially for saving objects when doing
troubleshoot actions.
I noticed that on more and more eDirectory structures i'm gettings -608 errors
(illegal attribute) when restoring objects that have a auxiliary class as
extension. This results in an unknown object in the target tree.
Is this a bug in the NWDSBackupObject and/or NWDSRestoreObject api's or should I
use an alternative way to backup eDirectory?
Thanks in advance,
Jacco |

Hi,
From a very old posting from David Mair:
The backup/restore APIs in the NDK reflect what might be considered
naivity. At the time these APIs were first declared there was no real
idea of what directories would be and file system semantics seemed
like a good fit. Time has demonstrated that this is not the case at
all and directory backup can't be handled as in a file system. For
that reason I'd consider the NWDS backup/restore object APIs to be
obsolete and look for an alternative solution.

Hi Alex,
I saw that posting. But what's the alternative. How should software developers
write support for eDirectory in their backup & restore software?
Thanks,
Jacco |

Hi Alex,
Yes, been there. But this is not an alternative.
With the other API you can selectively back-up and restore objects, with these
you can't.
I still don't know how developers should write support for eDirectory in their
backup & restore software with the same functionality as before.
Thanks,
Jacco
