Hi everybody
I'm puzzled .... My server keeps abending in apache/php (see abend.log)
It's a NW6.0SP5 + nwlib6C + Apache/2.0.59-p (NETWARE) mod_jk2/2.0.5-dev
+ PHP 5.0.5 (latest build of 28 august)
This morning when users started working I had abends without a stop.
The only thing I changed was typing "tomcat41 stop"
So nothing of the home made .jsp's is running.
Is this the raison why the server abends ???
Can anybody confirm ??
Now the server runs without a problem. (knocking on wood)
The most hits are squirrelmail. (php)
The mod_jk2 is still loaded. Seems that mod_jk2 is not that good a
choice ?? Do I have to replace it with mod_jk 1.2.5 ???
Or is it bad programming in the jsp ???
If it isn't an php problem sorry to misuse this group.

no, I dont think so...

no. mod_jk2 is as good as mod_jk - that shouldnt matter.
But its also easy to test: just re-configure to use mod_jk, and test for
some days;

Tom, since you're anyway on an unsupported OS - why not just switching to
Apache 2.2 ? Please tell me what you really use beside mod_php and mod_jk
(2), and we can check if an upgrade goes without trouble. Only thing which
we dont have with Apache 2.2 is mod_perl - if you dont need it then you can
and should upgrade; the 2.2 series proofed to be very stable. If you use
Apache authentication somewhere you need probably some new configs, but
that's not a big problem.
Also please set LogLevel Debug, and check the Apache and PHP (error) log
files around the time the abend occured; also try to create a coredump...

My config of apache2.2.3 is standing ready to be loaded as backup plan.
In the meantime I found in your answers that a good trick to do is
increasing the threadstacksize if you get EIP error in php5lib.nlm
otherwise trheads in apache get stuck ... seems so familiar.
I found the typical abends according to this problem that they were also
my abends.
Am I on a good track to solve the problem ??

Hi Guenter
I also found that runnig without Veritas Backupexec the problems go away.
After a BESTOP the server is stable even with a processor load of 100%
during hours. (openload)
I also found a remark from yourself about apache 1.3, php, mysql to apply
the latest nss patch. My server is up to date.
But can Veritas be the 'bad boy' in processes cause it's nss related
(heavy load)
Is there a fix ???

sure, that's posissible - hoever I doubt from your last abend logs you
posted...; seems more that its either from worm attacks, or from a badly
coded PHP app....
the only chance you have is comparing times of logfiles and abend logs;
f.e. if its really from Veritas then you should see the last time Veritas did
make an access in their log files, and can compare to your last abend...
same with Apache/PHP/Tomcat: if it comes from there you should also see a
last access ib the access / error /php log, and then the matching time in the
abend log -- at least you can so narrow down what's your real problem....
Further more I'd suggest you to upgrade to Apache 2.2.3 if mod_perl is not
needed since this is most stable Apache version you can run...
