| nds odbc and visio 2003 crash |
 |
Thu, 26 May 2005 17:01:18 GMT |
I'm attempting to build a network map of my zenworks workstations in visio 2003
pro. Since MS pulled the nds and zenworks links out of visio as of the 2003
version my only other option appears to be the ndsodbc driver. Problem is,
whenever I attempt to link my master object in the stencel, visio crashes.
the db wizard connects to the 'workstation' table, I select 1 field for primary
key, and then select a field at which point visio crashes
AppName: visio.exe AppVer: 11.0.3216.0 AppStamp:3f3df10d
ModName: dbwiz.dll ModVer: 11.0.3216.0 ModStamp:3f3df2e5
fDebug: 0 Offset: 000526f1
Any ideas?

Hi
Hopefully somebody who knows Visio can help... Otherwise you're going to
need to walk me through the problem because I don't know Visio but found a
eval copy to test with.
First please send an email to sperrin at novell.com so I can send you the
June NDK driver to work with. I'd like to make sure you see the problem
with the most current code.
Then if you still see the problem please send me exact instructions for
reproducing the problem (very detailed please, I don't know how to associate
a visio database with the odbc driver).
In regard to "my only other option appears to be the ndsodbc driver"
that
may be true, but I did see the ability to use ActiveX controls in Visio (I
think) so if you're comfortable with that approach there are controls that
access eDirectory and nwapp stuff at
http://developer.novell.com/ndk/activex_ndap.htm for ndap and
http://developer.novell.com/ndk/activex_ldap.htm for ldap.
A broader issue will be that Zen stores a bunch of stuff as octet strings so
I'm not sure how much translating had previously been done for you but
except for the nwappa control, these values will come across as raw data.
Thank you
Susan

With the existing code, it seems that if I don't use the user defined table
then that is when it crashes. If I do setup and use a user defined table
then it seems to work well enough, except that I am having odbc disconnect
issues. After setting up a few of the workstation objects on my map, i get
errors that the table (user defined table name) doesn't exist. I normally
have to restart visio to get it working again.
I'll await your latest files and test further.
I'm also doing up a coolsolution for doing this once i have all the quirks
worked out so that others can use this.
thanx

Hi
I sent to the email on your post.
It's always a good idea to use user-defined tables in any event both for
performance and memory conservation. It may be that when user defined
tables resolve your problem it's due to memory issues as documented in the
troubleshooting section of the help.
Thank you

Thanx. I assume you didn't get the email I sent direct to you. I probably
wasn't paying attention and just replied to your sender address which means
it would have been lost in limbo somewhere.
I got your file and tested. It now seems to work properly both ways as I
haven't had a visio crash yet. I'll keep testing over the weekend to see if
its fixed now or not.
