OO install hangs with Innotek java

OO install hangs with Innotek java
Sun, 27 May 2007 10:42:47 -100
Altho I have gotten OO to install, I'm writing to here to see what I had
missed. Thank you to all who reply.

I had a situation where when I attempt to install OOo 1.1.4 I purchased
from Mensys some time ago would not install with Innotek java. I had
tried all known recent versions SDK's, JRE's _05, _09 none would work.
Installation would launch a java console app then hang. Consoles for
both OS2 and java showed no text. I had Java_Home pointing to
C:\Programs\Java142, and PATH entry C:\Programs\Java142\JRE. I had
completely removed all older versions of Java 1.3.1, 1.1.8. I've tried
eCS 1.2r and 2.0b4. I uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted all entries
in the registry relating to Innotek Java, I'm surprised I don't have a
hole worn in my harddisk.

I was able to get it to work with Golden Code. The installation went
thru so fast I hardly remember what I did. I was even able to install
the windoze version of OO 1.1.5. I cant find OO 2.0 for windows, I do
not have an OO maintenance subscription to get 2.0 for OS2 so I haven't
tried these yet.

Is there any word of a more recent version of java pending release? 1.4
is so legacy now and I find some java apps don't work because of the old
versioning. Has any one tried to get a newer java to work thru Oden or
Innotek RT?

Something wrong somewhere on your system as installation of OO114 does
not need java. It does need the Innotek Runtime I think - I do not have
this version of OO so I am guessing but it would be mentioned in the
Readme somewhere.

I think you may be confusing java and Innotek Runtime?

Sounds like the OO install had problems with the Runtime, possibly some
wonky Registry entries...

Shame...

May have helped find the other problem but I guess that is not so
relevant now. Does lead me to suspect that the Registry entries for
java142 may have something to do with the above failure though.

GC java does not run win32 applications so is not relevant to installing
Innotek's OO114/5.

I drag'n'dropped the Setup.exe file onto a program object for ar5os2.exe
(from the Innotek Acrobat5 package) - that works really well. It also
shows the install does not involve java at all.

I cant find OO 2.0 for windows,

Check the openoffice.org website

My experiences were that it was hard work to install - had to install in
Windows and copy the installation directory tree - and get running. When
running it was prone to falling over for no reason. Just 1 of those apps
that requires a bit more in the way of win32 bits than Odin or ar5os2.ex
(Innotek Runtime) provide.

Last beta I tried still had a few problems and from looking at posts
about later betas/release candidates some of those problems are still
being fixed.

No - but you are welcome to email Sun and ask when they will provide an
OS/2 version of their current java.

Do not expect any reply apart from an automated "we got your message and
will respond - possibly".

That is going to become a more common problem leaving eCS users running
older versions of java apps. Sometimes it is worth emailing the author
and asking if the app really requires 1.5 or whether it would work with
1.4 if there are no specific 1.5 calls in the code.

I did this with JPC recently and they made their Virtual Machine 1.4
compatible http://www-jpc.physics.ox.ac.uk/

Yes, No success. Even java142_11 seems very different to earlier javas
and I could not work out how to update 142_09 using it. Maybe it is
possible but not by me...

I think I read somewhere that Sun was releasing/has released the source
code for java so if you feel like taking on a small project to occupy
your mind for a while... :-)

Both Innotek and Windows installers launch Java.exe consoles. You see
them open in the task bar. Innotek Runtimes are automatically installed
with the Innotek OOo installer. After the OOo installer installs the
runtime, it quits and asks to reboot.

Java, Searching the HD for all directories labled java11, java131, and
java142. Searching the registry for keys pointing to these directories.
Searching config.sys for path, classpath, libpath, dllpath, java_home,
etc, and removing all entries. And, yes, I uninstalled the innotek
runtime, and removed the innotek runtime update available from eCSMT.

This may be true as I had experienced different behavior of the
installer at times after a clean removal and reinstall of Innotek Java.

Could be a way for a crash course on os2 programming!

By default eCS installs Java 1.1.8 which it uses for LVM if my memory is
working. Java 1.1.8 also needs to be in the path to work unlike later
Javas which use the executable location to tell the java where to find its
components.

Before running OOo you do need to have both the Innotek Font Engine and
the Runtime installed. The Innotek site states that their Java 1.4 is
needed, but that has not been my experience. I do not remember OOo asking
for its location, but I could stand corrected on that.

I run both OOo 1.1.5 and Star Office O7 (which runs under the Runtime or
Odin--Aros2.exe is used as the loader for the Runtime) use Java for the
installation routine and the options.

The use of Java is what has made OOo cross platform and why OOo 2.x.x
dependency on Java 1.5 or later has resulted in the creation of the
Serenity eCS version which runs without Java.

Despite the Innotek Website comment, I wonder if a native Java was needed
for the installation.

> I cant find OO 2.0 for windows, I do

I am using the OS/2 OOo 2.0.4 RC2. The only glitch which I have
encountered has been sending too much data to the clipboard. There is a
conflict with the font engine. Since SO8 is my working GUI word processor
on my office WinXP system, having OOo2 on my home desktop has been great.

I should note that I do run OOo2.1 and SO8 using the Innotek runtime under
eCS. You cannot install it, nor change the options, since they require
Java 1.5 or later. I copy it from my Win box, including the settings.
