OOo Base -> connection to MySQL db?

Hi all,

I don't really understand the read1st.txt:

"- Base module supports dBase, MySQL, ODBC databases,
   hsqldb not supported (req. java)."

Does this say that there is a way to access a MySQL database or not? I tried
ODBC abd JDBC which both didn't work ("JDBC class not functional",
"ODBC dll
corrupt" were the error messages).

I would really love to get some data out of my CMS system (an online survey)
into a Calc table or the like.
