Recent Builds Not Providing Download Connection

Recent Builds Not Providing Download Connection
Wed, 27 Feb 2008 16:54:48 -080
Early builds of 9.50, like all earlier ones I've used, linked to
download sites successfully. The last two builds, though, open to the
vendor's site successfully but fail to transfer to the download page for
the material I want to download. There is no warning; the attempt to
connect just dies.

I haven't used all builds of 9.50, but this problem occurs in my current
build 9807, and also in the one I used previously. AFAIK I have not
reconfigured anything related to this function. I can copy the link to
the downloads and paste it into MSIE successfully so the problem seems
confined to my system and only when I'm using Opera.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Any suggestions on what
configurations I might look at (I can provide current configuration
information if someone can suggest which area of the preferences I
should look at)?

Sun reports that Java is successfully installed, and Javascripts are
enabled. Cookies are enabled, and my firewall seems to be in order.

No, it's pretty much any page with an internal link to a download site.
This has been happening about two or three weeks now; Before that I
never had problems downloading unless there was a problem at the server
end.

I forgot to mention one symptom that may be relevant: when the server
side redirect happens, Opera downloads something behind a blue screen
and immediately goes idle, displays the reload icon, and sits. Applying
Reload just repeats the cycle. A few times, it has displayed raw binary
text, but normally it just displays a blank blue screen within the Opera
display area.

That's the kind of specific suggestion I was hoping to get from users
here but, unfortunately, I do have automatic redirection enabled. I
assume it is a configuration error somewhere, but I haven't been able to
narrow down a specific area to recheck. If I got an error message
instead of having the redirect link just die it would be easier, of
course, but that wouldn't be as much fun. :-)

Thanks for the response.

Late news: I've just downloaded two application files. For the first
one, I had to paste the download info into MSIE because it failed as
usual in Opera.

However, I just downloaded an .exe file from CNet's site; the redirect
was from http://www.revouninstaller.com/. I didn't readjust anything in

Any specific page were this happens? I've succesfully downloaded files
with recent builds... Also check if you haven't disabled automatic
redirection (Prefs > Advanced > Network).

The latest versions of 9.5 do not download .exe files.
For instance at www.geek.com .Lots of programs to download but apparently
nothing hapens when I go to the download page.

If I go to tools, preference, download, look for .exe then click edit, I
can see that it is set to use divx plugin. So, I change it to use download
dialog and it is now fixed.

Thanks for this info, John. I also went to Tools | Preferences |
Download, and I found several application entries had no extension. Each
one had been set to use a plug-in, though some plug-ins didn't seem
related to the item in the application list. I re-set each one to open
with Opera; I haven't found a good .exe file to download as a test since
I made the change, but I'll keep track over the next day or two. I
think that probably solves my problem.
