can plugins be shared among browsers?

Can Opera share plugins with MSIE and/or Firefox?
For example, can Opera share the Adobe Flash
and Sun Java plugins with MS IE?

Or does the plugin downloaded by a particular browser
get assigned for use by that browser only?

I don't think it's typical that the browser installs the plug-in, but
that the plug-in installs itself after being downloaded. So I would
guess that most plug-ins don't really know (or care) which browser was
used to download it. So, in principle, the plug-in should work in all
browsers once it is installed.

However: There are two main "browser plug-in" interfaces. One is the
netscape 4 interface, and the other is ActiveX. Opera only supports
the netscape 4 interface as far as I know.

And note that in general, opera doesn't use any plug-in to run Java.
Instead it uses the java system directly.

Yes, Flash mysteriously works for me in Opera, now, as it
does in IE. I guess the plugin took my threat against it seriously
:-)

Why doesn't this disallow the same plugin from being used
by both Opera and IE? (Presumably, IE would use the ActiveX
interface, while Opera would use the Netscape 4 interface.)

Java didn't work in Opera for me - until I found the enablement
checkbox in Preferences/Advanced/Enable Java. Now it works
in both Opera and IE. Duhhh..... :-)

And you can also disable it on-the-fly from F12. This comes handy for all
users who need Java only occasionally.

Or... click Tools/Quick Preferences and check/uncheck "Enable
Java."
