How do I stop Opera stealing focus when using tabbed browsing? As an
example - if I have multiple tabs open then log into gmail but switch
to another tab before gmail has loaded the gmail tab will ALWAYS
steal focus.
And speaking of gmail, why does Opera take so long (compared to FF)
to set up the secure connection before logging in?

It's not Opera, it's probably the Javascript on gMail doing it.
Assuming you're using Opera 9.24, go into the preferences, move to the
Advanced tab and then go down to 'Content'. Click on the Javascript
Options button and from the dialogue that pops up, deselect the options
