O9.50-1823(.6) and plugins (General comments)
Tue, 26 Feb 2008 14:13:49 -080

1. nppdf.so:

Seems to work w/ Opera, although why anyone would want to use it,
is beyond me. It's a memory and CPU hog. Problem w/ opening a new
link on a nppdf.so displayed PDF. When you go back -- to display
the pdf file -- I'm unabled to get the pdf to display, no problems
w/ Firefox. acroread 8.1.2. See first sentence.

2. libflashplayer.so:

   a) Flash (9.0.115 doesn't work if flash is loaded from
/opt/netscape/plugins/ Gentoo's default location to store
Flash. Nothing happens, just a screen saying loading. Test site was
   http://www.reuters.com/news/video

   b) Added a directory which had a soft line (ln -s) to
/opt/netscape/plugins and tried again. This time the wrapper
seg-faulted. Since nobody else is seeing this problem, I suspect
it's a timing issue in Flash -- my computer is too slow (400MHz) to
run Flash 9.0 115, so they tell me by generating an illegal
   instruction.

   c) It 'appears' that Gentoo users of Opera and Flash 'might' see
2a). Opera would be smart to remove or ban an directory paths that
contains the word 'netscape'. Put another way, maybe Opera should
not include the path /opt/netscape/plugins in it's default plugin
   directory search path.

   ~% cat /usr/share/opera/ini/pluginpath.ini | grep "/netscape/"
   /opt/netscape/plugins=1
   /usr/lib/netscape/plugins=1
   /usr/local/netscape/plugins=1
   /usr/local/lib/netscape/plugins=1
   ~%

3. nphelix.so:
BBC videos don't work, but the radios do.

4. gxineplugin.so:

Kinda works. The backend is very slow and limited.

5. mplayerplug-in.so:

   Broken. Bug-report previously generated.

6. gecko-mediaplaye:

Works at most sites. I have prolems w/ www.stage6.com
   videos. Bug-report previously generated.

7. vlcplugin:

   Not worth bothering with.

8. totem:

   See comment 7.

9. KDE plugins:

   Your kidding, right!

Bug report submitted - bug-315554

Not really a bug -- just a means of giving feedback on GNU/Linux
plugins in 1823-(.6).

I don't see the above issue/problem w/ O9.50-1887(.6)

Both of the above issues/problems are still present in 1887.

The bbc videos 'seem' to work a 'little' better w/ 1887(.6)

I removed gxine from my system -- I'll let somebody test it.
