Problems with Opera 9.5b1 in Gutsy

Problems with Opera 9.5b1 in Gutsy
Sun, 06 Apr 2008 15:37:36 -050
I installed the deb I got from Opera.

Tried to run it from the F2 command line and got nothing.

Then ran it from a terminal and got this:

seth@seth-desktop:~/Desktop$ opera
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
opera: Module initialization failure [40]. Generic failure (-1)

Googled that last line and found a cryptic suggestion to start it with
this:

opera -pd /tmp/testopera &

I did that and it started. Don't know what those operators mean. I got
this:

seth@seth-desktop:~/Desktop$ opera -pd /tmp/testopera &
[1] 7349
seth@seth-desktop:~/Desktop$ ** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 1 (1)
** Message: GetValue variable 2 (2)
opera -pd /tmp/testopera &
[1]+ Done opera -pd /tmp/testopera

Bottom line is I can run the browser, although I have to start it in this
odd way. Don't really know what's going on here. Also, it seemingly
overwrote my earlier 9.27 install.

Can anybody tell me what I need to do to get the program to start the
normal way?

That just created a new directory /tmp/testopera, which opera will use
instead of ~/.opera, hence you will not have access to your bookmarks,
messages, or customized settings.

Basically, it just shows that there's something wrong with one of the
settings in ~/.opera/*.ini, or corruption in the mail database.

Not sure how to help solve the probelm though.

Normally it's a problem w/ the mail directory -- assuming you use
Opera's e-mail. If so cp the ~/.opera/mail directory 'someplace' else
(cp -R ~/.opera/mail /tmp/), then delete the ~/.opera/mail directory
and see if Opera starts (w/o the -pd option).
