1. locate libjava.so

2. If libjava.so is on your system, then the directory that contains
   this shared library becomes the path to 'java'

3. Set the directory (using the GUI)

4. Stop Opera

5. Restart Opera and do <alt t a j>. Does the java console come up>

Note I assume you aren't running 64-bit Opera.
