I have tried to set up online banking with Natwest, but it claims not to
support my browser. Its published policy is:
PC Users Microsoft® Windows
95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP or Vista Microsoft® Internet Explorer
version 5 and 6, and 7
or
Netscape? Navigator?
version 7.1 and up
or
Mozilla 1.5 and up
or
AOL 8.0 and up (AOL subscribers only)
or
Firefox 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0
or
Opera 9.x
MAC Users OS 8.1 to 9.2 Microsoft® Internet Explorer
version 5.1.7
or
Mozilla 1.2.1
OS X Netscape? Navigator? version 7.1
and up
or
Mozilla 1.5 and up
or
Firefox 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0
or
Safari 1.3 and 2.0
Netscape and Mozilla users with other operating systems such as Linux may
also be able to access the service.
For technical reasons the service does not currently support the Opera
browser on OS X. We are working with the publishers to address this.
------------------------------------
Some interesting oddities there.
What's up with Mac OS X? (opera.mac included in Newsgroups).
It allows Opera 9.x under the usual Microsloth systems, but not under
Linux (nor even Firefox there), but how does it know whether you are using
Linux or not? I thought the outward appearance of Opera was the same for
all Oses.
I was using Solaris 10 on a SPARC system.
So, some questions, the first two for Eirik, I suppose.
1. When Opera identifies itself, does it include the version (I just
upgraded to Opera 9.25).
2. Does Opera identify the Operating system, or is there some otherway
within the HTTP protocol that a site could discover that? (Presumably
Solaris 10 would then identify as SunOS 5.10).
3. I though I would try to identify myself as Mozilla, but Opera does not
seem to allow that (only Internet Explorer and Firefox). So is there
anyway around that.
I DO have a Mozilla browser that I could use, and it appears willing to
let me use that, but I would prefer not to go that route if I could avoid
it. Alternatively, if I sign up that way, might I then be able to use the
service through Opera?
Anyway, has anyone else out there found a way around this problem?
