How it happened I haven't a clue.
How do I get it back ?
I like it so much I found a similar one (not as good but with more spaces)

Also - someone asked a good question about how do you set speed dial as the
home page - yes, how ?

Thats a shame.
It would be a good idea to make such a thing possible.

Er - maybe you clicked the little 'hide speed dial' link? What do you see
after opening a new tab?

You can't set Speed Dial as homepage, it doesn't have an address.

No small 'Show speed dial' button in the lower right corner? The other
possibility is that you deliberately disabled it with the option from
opera:config#UserPrefs|SpeedDialState but that seems unlikely. Or that the
speeddial.ini file in your Profile folder has become corrupted, also
unlikely.
