If you select view/period/today, for example, there's no indication
that you've restricted the view. There should be a reminder on the
folder/filter panel area. That goes for the other view restrictors,

If you go into the Buttons on the appearance settings, there's a drop down
list for this setting that you can drag to the mail toolbar. This will
display the current mode as well as allow you to change it. The control
widgets for other preferences are also useful as visual cues as to the
current setting of that preference (Javascript/Plugins/Cookies enabled,
