k7aay:This poor fellow had an absolutely horrid time upgrading a server. How
would you have done it, without scrapping the OS and converting to Ubuntu?
The better question must be asked, why was he using a desktop OS on a server?
The last sentence of this whole article really makes me question the actions
they've taken.
Luckily, he is a smart man, and from this point on, Linux will be the OS of
choice on all his servers, it is cheaper to buy, cheaper to install, and much
more secure. Desktops are under evaluation, but Microsoft lost this chain for
sure on the server side. If it doesn't think their brain dead policies are
costing them money, I am proof positive that they are, and I am willing to bet I
am far from alone. µ
That bit in bold in something that shows extremely poor judgement from a
sys-admin, assuming something is much more secure just because is a certain
product is bound to lead to potential issues down the track.
I also question that linux is cheaper to install as well, I've always beleived
it was more expensive to get staff trained in its use.

To start with, the article wasn't a review of his installation woes as much as
it was a rant on Microsoft.
Why?
These glaring errors:
In the first place, he states what hardware he has. Doesn’t let on to what
operating systems are in place.
Why, please, please, why, does he need to reinstall the OS after
installing/replacing a controller? Why?
A search for HP 5100 on the HP.UK site shows that the system was generally
spec'd with XP SP2.
He never states that he wants to use a server operating system; just a
'repository for files, occasional backups, and a shared printer is all they
would need, nothing special'.
He states, blatantly and incorrectly, that Microsoft disallows the inclusion of
operating system media with new computers. OEMs ask for a vig to include the
disks in the deliverables; for ~$10-$60. Does not seem to be a lot of money when
you need to reconfig the system, but hey, it seems like a lot of $$$ when the
systems are being bought. Go figure!
Correct me, but isn’t it a RESTORE disk? As in restore to default config?
What machine bought in the past 2 years shipped with a floppy? Any sys-droid who
spec’d a floppy drive should face non-fatal lapidation.
How crazy is this statement, “If you have a copy of XP to use, guess what? The
key that comes with the HP box is restricted to the version of Windows on the
restore CD. Vanilla XP will not work, nor will any of the copies I have lying
around. Your choice, use only HP hardware or buy a copy of XP.” My reply?
Read the freakin’ EULA!!! The license is good for the same version of XP, not
the kaka he would have us believe. A clean copy of XP should install with that
key, as long as the versions (Home, Pro, Tablet PC, MCE, x64, etc,) are
similar.
After his incompetent misadventures, what does this ‘Mensa’ do? Convert the
system/network to Ubuntu Linux. Earning the eternal praise of the victim
business owner in the process. And, also in the process, earning himself another
iron rice bowl. (I know mareeds understands this! The term iron rice bowl.)
Sweet!
Let us measure what has happened with this supposed ‘expert’:
1) Reconfig system without the 1st thing necessary to ensure a good
install: a working copy of the target operating system.
2) Did not validate the install before committing the hardware.
3) By all indications did not have a hardware driver disk?
4) He was installing, I think, XP as a server OS. LOL
5) He wants a floppy drive…for???
6) His SATA RAID came without drivers, which his incompetent a$$ did not
catch before the install!
But let us not blame this droid, let us blame…..drum roll, please…..:
Microsoft!
Yes, Microsoft. The Evil Empire. The Borg.
Wow.
And he gets an audience with The Inquirer for this? With that sort of headline?
Lets you know why the INQ is regarded as Thinking Man’s A$$***e.
Even the writers of the old Sheriff Lobo series could not come up with such
crap.
A trillion baboons using Google Writley on the WankerPC (OLPC) in a trillion
years will not come up with such drivel.
Now you see why I proselytize Small Business Server and chant Vista, Office
2007, SBS as a mantra daily!
PS. Please don't call him a poor fellow. Self-flagellation, outside of
monasteries and such, shold not be encouraged in civilized society.
