| No Clean Installs on Upgrade Vista? |

This story is getting a lot of ink, and since I don't have an upgrade version of
Vista, I would like to throw out the question:
Is it true?
If it is, does it mean that you can only upgrade that install of Vista, or
perform a clean install to another partition.
If my upgrade installs of Vista are any indication, this would quickly be
another source of consumer angst about Vista, since a clean install takes less
than or about 25 minutes, and an upgrade can take forever.

I thought that when you used to upgrade a copy of windows if you provided an old
windows cd it let you install a totally fresh copy.

I'm very curious about this as well, because if it's true then it's the worst
idea that Microsoft has had in years - it will cause a lot of trouble for
customers!

My understanding (although I haven't tried it myself) is that you can install a
"trial" of Vista from the Upgrade DVD by not providing the CD Key.
Then I read you can reinstall from the same distribution as an upgrade to the
trial by providing the Key. If this is the case, it's obviously an unintended
hole in the system since it doesn't require an old OS license.
Again, I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it's true, but it's been
reported on a few Web sites.
