Vista vs XP

Vista vs XP

According to benchmark report by Pfeiffer Consulting

Problem Area 1: Menu Latency
“On average, Windows Vista was 20% slower than Windows XP in the menu latency
benchmarks conducted for the project. “
Problem Area 1: Desktop Operations
Windows Vista with Aero was the slowest in these tests, scoring an average of
2.73 seconds per operation, compared to 2.34 seconds for Windows XP, and 1.50
seconds for Mac OS X”
Problem Area 3: Mouse precision
“Windows Vista scored a Mouse Precision Error Coefficient of 0.52, compared
with 0.40 for Windows XP, and 0.08 (!) for Mac OS X”

"finally the report advising that "before deciding on an upgrade to
Windows Vista, it seems wise to conduct thorough productivity analysis"

My concerns about that report...

- The report is not at all compared usefulness and features, and real world
usage

- No words about vista search which is integrated almost every corner in Vista
(this is not productivity?)

- More than 30+ awesome features are not compared, simply a menu is little slow,
that does matter? Who cares such a small precisions numbers...?

- compare architecture of the house, don't compare house by appearance

What do you think?

What do I think?

First of all, Saran, I think that you are (as usual) dead on right.

This silly precision in measurement? Do we describe a statue by announcing its
mass to the nearest femtogram? What, pray tell, is a Mouse Precision Error
Coefficient? If I'm a tattoo artist in the late stages of cerebral palsey, is
Vista a risk factor for Hep C? (And let's show the CDC which clades are
involved!)

T. S. Eliot would have called this report a "tedious argument of insidious
intent."

thanks.

The report also compared with Mac OX,
- How many applications exist in both platform?, anyone can count on Windows
platform? Apple’s total no.of apps would be below 10% of windows total apps
- Recently apple renamed their company name, what it indicating me is Apple’s
core vision is now mainly on to consumer devices (ex:ipod, iphone etc).
- Gartner reports also said that Vista is the last OS from Windows, is it so? I
bet, as long as we have computer(or any device) at home, at least every 5 years
we will be getting some awesome OS from Microsoft, I have no doubt on that.
- Compare how much investment Microsoft is doing for Research, is it not at all
matter?

finally, Deciding to buy OS is so differs from buying an application, we can’t
decide rudely, OS is a platform, choosing wisely is important for long term, we
can’t easily plug & play OS with hardware (changing OS vendor is a heavy
investment), we should analyze company background, its history, long term plans,
stability of the business, applications, community support, end-to-end solutions
for all digital life style etc

Next time the company can compare DOS vs Vista and tell us vista has 90% slow UI
than DOS, I will laugh for couple of hours

You're both spot on in my opinion, quick allow me to get out my stop watch to
measure the time differences between operating systems. Yet another waste of kb
that it's saved on

When I was somewhat younger, and for the 12 years I lived in Nigeria, my late
grandmother used to reiterate that old saw, "an idle mind is the devil's
workspace".

It isn't surprising that even today, over three decades a few years later, it
still resonates.

WTF is menu latency? And how does that play into the daily business operations
of a computer?

Desktop operations. A cross-platform test?

Mouse precision?

I'm desperately trying to find a way to absolve these yum-yums of inate
stupidity - lost in translation from French to English, cultural differences,
etc. - but the craziness of the whole report(?) is stunning.

What makes it even more unfortunate is that, due t the reach of the Internet,
this roll of toilet paper will reach Mac fanboi, prolonging their delusion.

Then again, their prolonging their delusion is AGood Thing!
