The BBC News is reporting this morning that Microsoft has confirmed that Windows
XP will be "retired" --that is, no longer available to be shipped on
new PCs--as of January 2008. Here's a clip:
"Microsoft has confirmed that from 31 January 2008 large PC makers, such as
Dell, HP and Toshiba, will no longer be able to buy licences for the software so
they can install it on new machines."

According to my MVP Lead, the 2008 date is for "OEM"s. January 2009 is
when it goes away for "system builders".

Don't look now, but there are reports the Dell has reverted to selling systems
with XP alongside Vista.
What is listless ship Round Rock seems to be right now!

They have decided to offer Windows XP on a very few machines. Some of their
users have been asking for XP. The actual percentage of user requests looks
very small, but with the ground Dell has been losing, I guess they're willing to
try anything.
