You have two problems. For the error message...........
Spell Checking does not work in OE:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm
An error occurred while the spelling was being checked or: Spell Check was
halted:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=224176
Now when that is fixed, you are going to find that your spell check is in
French since you are using Office 2007. To fix that................
You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974
Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.
Vampirefo:

TinySpell:
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/ (Checks the spelling as you type).
Australian English Spell Check
(Also suitable for other English speaking countries.)

If you have a previous version of Office, see this:

I have been using IE6.0 w/OE6 on a Win XP computer for a long time, never
had a problem with Spell-check. MS works has always been installed on this
computer. Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2007, now when I run
spell-check in OE I get a message that "an error occurred while the
spelling
was being checked." I'm hoping that I can point OE to either MS Works
which
is still on this computer or MS Word. I searched around looking for a place
where I might change the settings, but had no luck. Even went to the Help
menu but of course it does not address problems with Spell-check only that
you need one of the word processing programs on your computer for it to
work. I am so dependent on spell check to check my spelling that I have to
copy/paste into Word, run check then copy/paste back again to OE. This is
not a happy situation!
Thanks for any help you can give me.
