How can I copy an "object"

How can I copy an "object"

PSE6 on XP.

First, I'm using the term object just because I don't know the right name.

Start with any photo. Make a selection with the Quick Selection tool or any
other method.

Edit -> Copy

You now have it on the clipboard. Now:

Edit -> Paste

PSE should create a new layer with your paste. Mostly transparent except for the
"object" you pasted. Select the new layer.

Purely for convenience, make the original background layer not visible so you
only see the new layer.

Just to make it different than the original selection:

Image -> Rotate -> Flip Horizontal

The "object" you now have is different than the original selection. So
now I want to copy the resulting edit to the clipboard. The object is selected
and it has the sizing and rotate squares around it.

Yet Edit -> Copy is grayed out. Why? How can make a copy of this modified
object for pasting elsewhere?

Note that is is an over-simplied example but demonstrates the grayed out Copy
problem.

Thanks,

Mark,

Yes, you are correct about what I was doing. The sizing boxes were there because
I selected it with the Move tool. I had assumed I needed to first select it
before I could copy it.

Your method works great. I prefer to use the menus because I have trouble
remembering the zillions of keyboard shortcuts, but in this case it seems there
is no menu way to reselect the pasted object. ctrl-click on the layer looks like
the only way.

The other problem is that I was ctrl-clicking on the layer name to the right of
the small layer picture. That doesn't work. You have to cntl-click on the image
at the left or the reselection doesn't happen.

I notice it is also possible to select multiple objects on multiple layers using
ctrl-shift-click. Very cool.

Thanks for the help!

Bruce,
Hmmm... ctrl-clicking on the layer name works for me in addition to
ctrl-clicking the layer thumbnail.

Mark, I don't understand why we're getting different results, but I tried it
again and I definitely have to ctrl-click on the thumbnail, not the layer name,
to get the marching ants back.
