No, I haven't calibrated the monitor. I can understand that being the issue if
all images on the workstation were too light, but in this case only the jpg
output from PSE is too light.

Perhaps the problem is really that the RAW files are appearing darker than they
should, but the result is that if I adjust the RAW files to look good in PSE,
then the resulting jpg files created using "Save for Web" are
significantly lighter than their RAW/NEF source files.

Adobe Photoshop Elements requires a calibrated monitor. Other programs that
display .jpgs (and other image files) do not. So it is entirely possible that
.jpgs look good in one program and not so good in PSE, even if the monitor looks
properly calibrated to your eyes right now for most purposes.
