One more bit of info if I may.  It does not matter what font I use for the 
cell in question. Even if I chose one from the list provided, the text is 
still invisable.

This looks like a format issue, but the possible causes are varied.  One 
simple
diagnostic check:  remove any custom format from the offending cell
(Edit-Clear-Formats).

I give this a try, still no change to the cell.

Hmmm ... let's say one of the offending cells is A1, what do the following 
formulas return?

   @CELL("format",A1)
   @CELL("prefix",A1)
   @CELL("contents",A1)
   @LENGTH(A1)
