load error password protected file

load error password protected file
Tue, 11 Mar 2008 10:14:10 +010
I have a big problem:
an old large, complicated sheet refuses to load
(Error while loading).

info:
- sheet with multiple pages, data and formulas. No graphic objects or
charts.
- now using and created in QPW 8.0.0.709 Dutch

I already tried all the tricks I know.
The problem is also, that the file is password protected.
(Please note: I do know the password, and do not want a crack).

- Backup: it is a file of 2006, and the same corrupt file is in all backups
:-(
an older backup misses the part I need now. (Btw the password works fine
there)

- Startup Repair Switches : qpw /R1 or /R2 (file):
asks for password, but also refuse to read file
Btw when I try this on a normal working file, it seems unchanged, so with
formulas etc.
  Is that correct behaviour?

- read in new sheet: not possible with password

- new file with link to old cells: asks password, but then crashes QPW.

- Quick View and copy data: refuses because of password

- Read partially in wp8: refuses because of password

I could really use some help with this one. Any tips?
- Any change a new version could help?
- Or copy file-header from older backup with hex-editor? did that sometimes
in the very early days.

Thanks,
SCS

That is a most unfortunate situation. (I have endured the same. I remember
realising that I had been carefully saving corrupt copies.)

You could try in a new blank Notebook: Insert|File
but if you cannot open it you probably cannot Insert it either.

I think that your only option is to use that file (back it up first!) and
recreate the missing part. You may find that QuickView Plus can read the file
to an extent

(for $$) Quick View Plus, at:
http://www.avantstar.com/

or even use Notepad, or some other text editor.

That may allow you to extract some useful data.

Dear Roy,

The problem there is the password encryption.

QuickView (from wp installation) does not show a protected file, so not my
corrupted one either.

Neither does Notebook show anything.

I never realized that passwords could make this so much more difficult !

Given that your other methods have already failed, the chance for success is
probably very marginal, but you might also try importing the old data using the

FileCombine method (Tools-DataTools-CombineFiles). Recommend you set the recalc

method in the blank notebook to manual first, in case the corruption has
something to do with cross-wired formulas/calculations.

FWIW, opening the file in another spreadsheet application is likely going to
fail because of the password issue; otherwise, that might have been another
avenue to try.

QP8 used QPW files? You could try renaming it to WB3.

When loading other qp files to newer versions of qp, there is a problem
with the order of calculation. Since you can't open, it may not apply
here. See this thread for the links to the Corel articles.
