Can the Class Id for an Item be modified?

I need to modify the class ID  for a certain Item but I´m unable to do it on 
the normal screen because a "This Field cannot be changed" error
appear in 
the stoking UOM  which in fact I´m not changing at all. 

I know this field can be changed on the inventory  table

Hi,
It might be helpful to know your version and whether the screen is 
customized.  I am able to change the product class in inventory in my system. 
  I got a warning (not related to unit of measure), but it changed it when I 
confirmed.
