The next part of 'us' (tinu) trying to solve the problem of ambiguity is
getting everyone to recognize the concept of 'standards' -- where the
standard 'kilo' and 'mega' means 10^3 & 10^6, not 2^10 and 2^20.
Right now the 'world' thinks, "What does kilo- and mega- mean?" ...
and
the answer is currently, "It depends."
That's ridiculous.
It is also ridiculous for the world to think, "What does 2007/03/06
mean?" ... and the answer is currently, "It depends."
That condition makes me crazy.

For those of you struggling with a K being 1000 or 1024, this might
help a lot:

Learned something new today and it's been out since 1998.

If the context points to a date, then where is it not 6th of March, 2007?
On the other hand, 06/03/07 is ambiguous unless you know whether the writer
is from the USA or not, otherwise it means the same as above.

Also for most purposes, when folks are talking of numbers of magnitudes in K
or M, it really doesn;t matter much if it is 2**10, and 2**20 or 10**3 and
10**6 respectively. It;s only ambiguous in the computer world. Outside of
that those are always power of 10. Within the computer world it makes little
difference since few try to optimally pack memory or storage to the point
where it matters.
From time to time it has mattered to me but those are exceptional cases.
