When you/they burn a CD or DVD, you/they should finalize or close it, or
it may not play on other players.

I was given a 2 DVDs where home movies were (supposedly) burned to.

The DVDs were created on an XP SP2+ PC, however I don't know the specific
hardware or software used.

The DVDs played fine on the creator's PC.

You flip the DVDs over and look at then, and it is obvious they are about half
used.

However, neither with play on:
    - An old Dell with almost now DVD-ROM drive (Sony)
    - I couple year old DVD player hooked up to TV
    - An almost new XP laptop.

All of the devices did(and still do) play other DVDs fine.

This is not a 'copy-protection' issues as these are all home-movies that were
burned to the CD.

Any ideas what could be doing this?

I know some will want to know more about the recording unit and software, but at
this point, I may be a week to 10 days away from getting any more info...

I just had the same problem occur to me. I burned a movie from TV on my
combo DVD/VCR unit to a DVD disk, definitely finalized it. It played fine at
my house. I gave it to my g/f (it was a kids movie for her daughter) and it
wouldn't play in the older combo DVD/VCR player that I had given to her when
I got my new one with the burner. It DID play on her PC AND her older DVD
player AND her portable DVD player. It just won't play in that one unit. She
says half the DVDs she owns won't play in that unit, whereas all of them
worked in her older player. When I gave it to her I had never, ever had a
single problem with that thing playing DVDs. I have no idea what the problem
is.....

Another possibility is that, if they are DVDs, that they weren't burnt
as video DVDs but as data DVDs. Opening the DVDs in explorer should show
a couple of directories:

AUDIO_TS
VIDEO_TS

for a video DVD or, if it's a data DVD, variously named MPEG, AVI or
other format video files.
