cell phone spam?!
Wed, 4 Apr 2007 16:32:25 -0600
Hi all. I hope this is the right place to post this. If not, please kindly
direct me to the right forum.

I received spam picture message on my prepaid cell. I have service with
T-Mobile - actually it probably does not matter with whom. The spammer
advertises penny stock. As usual, idiotic subject - just like any other
penny stock spam I have ever received. No return phone number, just e-mail
address: neauaw@hail2u.net.

What gives? Isn't it enough to have my mailbox flooded "for free"? Do
I have
to pay 10c apiece to receive spam on my cell?

Please suggest a course of action. I know how to deal with e-mail spam, but
have no idea what to do with a turdlet that appeared in my cell phone.

Hoping to find some help - Maggie's Mom.

I take it you had a contract service, right? I have a prepaid one, and the
service basically told me same thing they told you... but you at least
could make them credit your account, and the girl I talked to told me she
could not do anything because it is a prepaid... I guess if I keep
receiving spam on that cell, I will simply use up the minutes and go
someplace else.

BTW, did they ever tell you how they made the spammer stop sending? -
Maggie's Mom.

When I had that problem the Verizon support told me I was SOL so I called
billing each and every time I received a spam and made them credit the
account. Eventually they figured out how to stop my receiving most of the

the CS agent was likely reading for a script. Did you try to go higher up
the food chain? Mention that if the problem is not solved you'll be moving
to a different provider when the time expires. Might get lucking and run
into someone with a clue that it cost far more to replace a customer than to
keep a customer

Alternatively ask them to turn off the text messaging function.

I have no idea what they did to stop the spam. For all I know they bit
bucketed the messages. At the time I only had 3-4 people sending text
messages and they were not mission critical messages regardless.

Although I won the text message battle we eventually gave up the cell phone
expressly due to VZNs BS games.

We worked in two areas and every time we wanted to change zones we were
expected to re-up for another 2 year contact. Tried to have two phone
numbers one in each zone. Opps must have two separate contracts. Had a few
extra phones that we wanted to activate for visitors for < 6 months. No joy

only with a 2 year commitment per phone.

Tried a pre pay phone only to discover we really didn't use it enough.

Now Freedom DOESN'T ring.

Thank you for your insight. I will try to go higher up, but from experience
I can tell that it will get me nowhere fast. Like you say, the world class
customer service specialists read from the script and have as much training
as they could absorb in about 8 hours. Some of them also speak with
non-American accents (should not be coming from me, but I have serious
problems understanding some of their utterances).

I do not use my cell for fun. I use it when I absolutely have to: roadside
assistance, emergencies etc. Maggie works at DOC, and sometimes a discreet
text message is much better option than a phone call, therefore I cannot
have the text messages blocked... I wonder if I could make T-Mobile block
only those messages, that come from e-mail. I wonder if they can be that
selective. But then, it would have to take someone with genuine knowledge of
the system, some goodwill towards the customers, and willingness to actually
give the excellent customer service they purport to have. I think I am SOL.

I also have been investigating the prepaid Alltel services. They seem to
have better coverage, less white spots, and telephones with better
reception. That is especially important to me when I make 100 mile trips to
purchase horse feed from a wholesaler. There were times when I really
appreciated having a cell phone. So - thanks again for your advice, I will
try to follow it if time permits. But - I won't be holding my breath waiting
for excellent service from T-Mobile. Or, for that matter, from any other
provider. After all, we're only the customers. Customers are like milk cows,
right? When the milk dries out, they get replaced, and there are so many
milk cows out there.... :) - Maggie's Mom.
