You can develop J2ME applications using NetBeans IDE. You can download
NetBeans from here: http://www.netbeans.org/downloads/index.html. You
have to download both NetBeans IDE and Mobility Pack for working with
mobile applications. You have to install java version "1.4.2_04" for
running the NetBeans IDE on your PC.

Here are some of links for starting with NetBeans:

- J2ME MIDP Development for NetBeans IDE 4.1 Quick Start Guide
   http://www.netbeans.org/kb/41/quickstart-mobility.html

- Using NetBeansTM IDE 4.1
   http://www.netbeans.org/kb/41/using-netbeans/index.html

There is one good forum for J2ME: http://www.j2me.org/

You can find some documentations from here:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/1,,200,00.html?topic=Java

Here you can find some Java tools and SDK from Nokia:
http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/0,6566,033_3-1,00.html

Some other cool tutorial links:

- Building J2ME MIDlets
   http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/0,6566,st_a_5,00.html

- J2ME Technical Tips

- Wireless Java, J2ME and MIDP Tutorials

Two of the following books I can suggest you.

- Beginning J2ME From Novice to Professional - Sing Li and Jonathan Knudsen

- Programming Java 2 Micro Edition on Symbian OS - Martin de Jode

Hope this will help you :-)

I think there is a lot of work going on with J2ME, the relative lack of
postings is more a reflection of the generic nature of J2ME and the fact
that there are many excellent forums discussing J2ME/MIDP issues, see for
example Forum Nokia.

vin2ktalks has already responded with some excellent suggestions. As far as
books are concerned I find
"Programming Wireless Devices with the Java 2 Platform Micro Edition"
2nd
Edition by Riggs et al.
a good general reference.

In terms of tools the minimum you need is a JDK (1.4 or later) and the
Wireless Toolkit. For an IDE as already suggested Netbeans is good, another
alternative is Eclipse with the EclipseME plug-ins

Regards
Martin
