| Adding new items to the Settings application? |

I wonder if it is at all possible to add configuration settings for a new
application to the existing Settings application, or if it is fixed to
contain what is provided from the beginning? We want to develop a background
(server) application that does not have any user interface, but requires
configuration. The alternative seems to be to develop a configuration client
application, that can either talk directly to the background information, or
through configuration files.

Personally I can't answer that - the settings application will belong to the
UI vendor and may or may not have extensibility options.
You will probably need to create your own application to do the settings.
This could be a "control panel application" or a normal GUI
application.
