So suggests Walter Mossberg in today' Wall Street Journal :
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB116908385298979668-email.html Vista: Worthy,
Largely Unexciting. XP Successor Doesn't Break New Ground on Ease of Use, but
It's Best Windows Yet.
This link should work for non-subscribers for ten days.
So, a new OS raises the minimum hardware requirements. And benefits from
contemporary mid-range hardware. And SOTA platforms work really well; the OS can
take advantage of them.
What would people say if it were otherwise?
Want more of a Paradigm Shift? Buy a system with Bloatware Galore. Or maybe read
that book by Thomas Kuhn.

It's unfortunate that he spent so much time laboring over a point-to-point
comparison with the Mac...it would have been nice to see this type of detailed
review based on the product's own merits. Granted that to get the most out of
the higher-end versions of Windows Vista, you need a higher-grade system. But
we're on such a rapid evolution that today's high-end will likely be mid-to-high
(or just mid) range next year.
I think designing Windows Vista to accomodate and secure (in Home Basic, for
example) the machine of yesterday, streamline the machine of today, and rock the
machine of tomorrow is a pretty good staying strategy. That's the direction
technology is going anyway...

Very well said. That penultimate sentence should be set to song. Have John (er,
'Lil Jon) sing the Hip Hop version.

>So suggests Walter Mossberg in today' Wall Street Journal Expecting Walt to
be objective about Vista is like expecting Steve Ballmer to be objective about
OS X. It's just not going to happen. >So, a new OS raises the minimum

And SOTA platforms work really well; the OS can take advantage of >them. What
would people say if it were otherwise? Have you used Vista? I'd suggest you live
with it for a week or two and see what you think then.

Vista was always going to be a damned if you do damned if you don't situation,
raise specifications needed - chastising customers
keep them similar - you didn't do enough
