| Mac vs PC ads don't carry in other cultures |

The Wall Street Journal has posted a story about the Mac vs PC ads that are
getting a lot of play on American television right now. The humor is received in
dramatically different ways in other cultures--for example, in Japan, the ads as
they are now presented would be very insulting, because it's considered rude to
boast about your abilities. As a result, the creative professionals who are
"localizing" the ads for the Japanese market went to great lengths to
ensure the message will be received in a way that they intend it--they changed
the physical appearance of the characters, the body language, the actions, and
even the comparison metaphor. Fascinating stuff! Click here to read the article
and see how the ad is being changed for other cultures--and whether it's working
or not--around the world.

The UK one is similar to the US one, cept both actors are fairly well known in
the 16-30 made up demographic.

I'm probably alone in this, but I don't find most of the ads particularly
mirthful.
In fact, the two I have seen are downright insulting and annoying.
Then again, it should play well with the nod-nod, wink-wink cognoscenti wanna-be
crown that are mac users.
I found these very funny, though. Here, here, and here.

Actually these ad's are perfectly in line with most mac users i've encounted,
always an annoying git trying to tell someone else of their superiority in some
far fetched rubbish way.

John, you're not alone.
You know it.
Even if you were very nearly so, you'd still be in good company--and mine, too.
Ad hominem abusive is not the weakest argument. Agumentum baculum is; and who
knows, maybe the fiendishly diabolical plot of the nefarious Dr. Steve to
destroy the marvelous Mr. Bill will devolve to that, crossing the line from tort
to crime.
Remember the 1985 Lemming / Think Different ad?
Really wrecked Microsoft's OS sales, and that's how Apple go to be dominant in
the market.

If you don't think so good, don't think so much.
Those dire warnings about a Vista upgrade and iPod use are having an effect,
which I'll illustrate with a story from yesterday.
A friend of a friend is very poor, so I bought her and her bright son and
parents four copies of Vista Home Premium.
She was worried about her iPod catching on fire until we showed her the facts.
Guess who's getting a Zune? (Although she doesn't know it.)
