Here's an interesting article published in Scientific American about the brain
trust that meets over tea each afternoon in Building 113 on the Redmond campus:
The Theory Group of Microsoft Research.
I'm so glad there is this kind of support for the type of thinking that doesn't
necessarily impact the bottom line (at least anytime in the immediate future).

Thanks for this post, so many people don’t know how much Microsoft investing
for research, this picture shows the clear difference, I'm surprised of
Google’s investment!

Update:
One of the fun project is Asirra, An identify service (to find out human vs
software), this is an alternative to capcha (have to type text, few times its
difficult to read text, especially disabled persons!). couple of projects
related to enhancing search experience are Query Projections, InSite Live etc.
