I am currently working on a site for our local County hospital - thanks
for an example of what I definitely do NOT want to do!
( fortunately our local hosp board knows that the site IS crucial to
their interaction with the community, and the back end we are creating
will save time/money/stress internally... now I just have to get it put
together!)

Why do they think they can build their own cheaper than to hire an
outside source?
I needed to go to the doctor. The local hospital has a clinic that's
open until 9:00 but I wanted to check. I was greeted by this:
http://www.ppgh.com/index.php
The clinic information I needed was no where to be found:
http://www.ppgh.com/fmc.php
So I emailed the only link I could find to ask if they were somehow
trying to put together a CMS or something, and if so, were they doing it
in-house.
The guy responded today. I was floored by his response. The comment
about it not being important to their business was mighty arrogant
especially when that's not the reason for a hospital web site. Wouldn't
it be for the user to get the information they need? Don't they realize
that?!
His response:
Thanks for the inquiry; however, the website is currently being handled
in house. We are using php and a mysql database to handle our content
management needs. This project is still in its beginning stages. We have
already invested a lot of time and money in developing a website, and I
don’t believe that we are ready to invest anymore. The hospital is
willing to take a little more time to develop our web presence to save
money in this area because our website isn’t really too important to the

Sometimes it is cheaper/better to do it in house, with the right size
company and the right experience. Obviously, at least one of those
criteria wasn't met in this case.
To help your cause, I voted and indicated that I don't like their new
site...
