Affecting cluster availability of a server node from an app?

Is there a way to dynamically affect a server node's cluster availability from
within an application running on that server?
In particular, from an RMI component that's participating in a loadbalanced
scenario, but runs into issues that require manual intervention, until which are
fixed, all requests routed to it should go to its loadbalancing partner.
