| javax.imageio inside Portal 5.1 - error during malloc |

I'm experiencing problems with WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.3 on Linux RHE 4.
I have a portlet that uses the javax.imageio to resize and convert images
uploaded by users.
Everything works perfectly, but sometimes I get the error:

error during malloc: unable do allocate memory
>>
on the stderr of WPS.
After this error, the JVM is not able to dump the memory.
I'm in difficulty in trying to understand and solve the problem.
The problem is that it's happening in a production environment.
Can anybody help me out?
