You bet it is! Welcome to Arts.Web.Design, Bearz!

I myself have no experience with blogging, yet my goslings all do it, along
with their friends. It seems that is how they all keep up with one another,
by checking out each other's blogs.

For the most part - my day to day activities are pretty much 'blogged' over
in the Arts group - some habits will remain strong no matter what new
technology or ideas might come up. With the development of 2 sites, one for
art and the other a commercial venture, I would like to know more about
'blogging' to see if something like that would be appropriate for either of
the sites.

"Themes" would also be most appropriate in here, as we do fall into
the Arts
category as well. Would you care to share an example or two with us?
Stationery has been a passion of mine since - well - since a long time ago -
lol - so seeing the idea of themes for blogging might inspire a new creative
avenue for me, and several others too!

Thanks for dropping in, and of course for rippling our thoughts on this
great new hot topic! Hopefully, we can get a few inspired souls to share
their thoughts on the matter *s*.

K.Dee :)

I've recently been having lots of fun building my own "Web Log" (or
"Blog")
as an appendage of the Bearz Cave . . . . .

The fun has been tremendous and goes on. I am amazed at the ease of
start-up and my only regret is not getting going earlier!

I was wondering if there were any other folks who might be interested in
sharing their experiences in "Blog" building or designing the
"Themes" ( a
bit like Stationery Design) that give individual "Blogs" their own
look and
feel? Is this the right place to open up this dialogue?

Wordpress

http://www.wordpress.org | http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Lessons has
extensive articles on blogs and developing themes and their setup is, IMO,
the best in the lot. They also offer free blog hosting at
http://www.wordpress.com (the freebies limit you to using the themes they
have included to choose from which is a pretty substantial list). I have
both the stand-alone and a freebie version of WP.

Blog templates are only like stationery inasmuch as you use stylesheets and
graphics stylistically. The blogs I've used (WP and Blogger) are PHP
structures that call in the styles and XHTML. The move to XHTML is a good
one even if it means more attention to tags and structure of your code
because it helps keep things working not by happenstance but by design. As
browsers become less forgiving of errors good coding and solid structuring
will keep your site viewable and enjoyable.

Hi js,

Thanks for the input. I too use WordPress and was amazed at the truly 5
minute start-up.

All that I needed to do beforehand was setup a MySQL database and my ISP
gives me one inclusive MySQL database so that was not a problem . . . .

The next step was to download some of the 600+ WordPress Themes, upload them
as instructed and lo and behold I could personalise the Blog.

The next thing was to 'adopt' one of the Themes and I've personalised this
by hacking the various provided PHP files for variations in color,
decoration and appearance. It even got really cool when I hacked the
background and header image to give it the absolute makeover.

Obviously this is more complex than plain HTML tweaking that mouseartists in
the NGs would have experience of when making stationery and creating basic
web pages but the concept of creating PHP files as composite components of a
web page is not that big a step.

I'm really keen to share the pleasure that can be gained from having one's
own "Blog" and personalising it. I'm also keen to pick up hints and
tips as
I go. :o))
