| Old WP files will not open |

I have a slew of old WP files (probably done in WP 8. They are dated
between 1992-94. Perhaps that might help in knowing which version of WP
they were written in, since I usually upgrade when a new version comes out.
These files have no wpd extension and most of them will not open with WP
11. On one attempt I got this message: "'Syntax Error' was detected
during the compilation of your PerfectScript macro.
An invalid command starting token has been encountered"
The odd thing is that many of these files (I did not try them all) DO
open in Word 2007.
Any idea what's going on here?
Thanks

See if running the utility, WPLook.exe, on a copy of one of your files makes
a difference. I don't know why they would be corrupt, though, since WP has
continued the file format with more recent versions. Also, when you
installed the most recent version of WP, did you install conversion filters
for earlier WP versions? Just a thought. Robert

Googling WP versions, I would estimate that the dates on my files
indicate that I may have used WP versions 5.1 or 6.0 for those files
with no wpd extensions.

rmk,
How do you try to open the files? As far as I can tell, the safest
method should be from within WP (File, Open).
Another thing: If I remember correctly, WP11 does not install the WP5.1
converters by default. You could try adding them (all all the other
conversion filters, as they don't need much space on your hard disk and
you never know if or when you might need them.
The fact that the files open in Word also suggests that not all the
converters have been installed in WP because Word installs a WP5.1
converter by default, though converters for later WP versions have to be
installed separately.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Are the conversion filters on the WP 11 disk? How would I access them?
