| Unable to Save File |
 |
Fri, 18 Jan 2008 16:12:37 -060 |
Longtime user of WP. When working in existing document and making changes,
sometimes it will not let me save the document with the existing filename.
Message states that file is open and is read only. My only option is to
rename the file and then save it. This does not happen every time I edit a
file but it happens a few times a day.
The document is not in use by any other person. I am able to save, create,
and edit other files in same folder with no problem. It is not related to
any particular file. One time I can edit and save a file and later on I
cannot save the same file.
Unable to duplicate this error at will - just random.
Please help.

Bill,
Could you have been accessing the WPWin document properties under File,
Properties? This can result in your situation: non-permission to save
the file with the existing filename. Once that has happened, then the
PC must be rebooted to recover.

Thanks for the reply Charles - the user that is getting this error has her
keyboard set to mimic WP 6.1 DOS and she uses those keyboard shortcuts to
save files. In this case she uses Alt + F, then S to save a file, so I do
not think she could get to Properties by mistake.
Any other ideas?

Bill,
Maybe this will help. Download WhoLockMe104.zip -- this is supposed to
let the user find out what was giving access denied, or similar, error
messages.
If you do try this, please let us know what happens. Thanks.

Hi, Charles!

I don't know whether this is true or not, but it seemed to me that you would
have wanted to include a URL to the utility that you were recommending to the
OP
(Bill R.):
http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/WhoLockMe104.zip
I believe though that this problem is peculiarly an as-yet unresolved WP11
issue
for some WP11 users, and likely one that will never be resolved for all of them
without resorting to the use of a macro like NTFS11.wcm, which was originally
designed to overcome the "Access Denied" bug when it was first
reported, but was
updated to ensure that documents can be save in WP11, WP12 and X3 (just
right-click the following link and choose "Save Target As...," or
equivalent):
