The definition based on the macro command's documentation:
Paste the Clipboard contents without text attributes (unless beginning
and ending attribute codes are included in the pasted selection).

| Paste Simple: undocumented feature? |

I was adding some variations on Paste as toolbar icons and came across
the option for Edit, Paste Simple in the toolbar editing dialogue. I
added the icon, and it appears to provide a very useful functionality
that apparently isn't available through any of the Paste options
accessible through the normal menu process.
It seems to paste data matching the destination formatting, or some of
it (I haven't tested too many formatting options), and at least the
destination active font. It pastes hyperlinks, bookmarks, TOC and Index
markings, and probably more. It doesn't bring in all the nasties that
Paste Rich Text adds.
There's no reference to Paste Simple in the Help file, and the term
always meant to me the same thing as Paste Unformatted or Paste Text,
but that's not how it's functioning here. And since it's not accessible
through the menu, and the icon is not similar to the other paste
options, I wonder if it wasn't intended to be used, and if there's a
reason I shouldn't use it?
I also wonder just what Paste Simple does and doesn't do. Nice feature,
it seems to me.

From one of my tips pages here: http://wptoolbox.com/tips/PSpecial.html
Paste as Unformatted Text is different from the old (now undocumented)
command, Paste Simple. As John Burness said in a WP user group:
> Doesn't Ctrl+Shft+V paste unformatted text without the need to
[create] a macro??
Yes, but.
There is good news and bad news. Paste Simple (Ctrl+Shft+V) does
let the text come in to the doc "in the font style and size, text color,
and any attributes (such as bold or italics) of the text at the
insertion point." If used on a blank line in the document, "the text
appears in the default font style, color, and size." Unfortunately,
Paste Simple (Ctrl+Shft+V) also brings any associated styles with the
text, a potential problem if pasting a mail program such as Eudora, as
well as some unexpected formatting.
I receive a fair amount of interview material or research through
email which I then cut and paste into a WP doc. Eudora sends along
styles called 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, plus HTML Address, HTML Blockquote, HTML
Cite, HTML Code, and so on. Even worse, Paste Simple brings in any
margin settings, tab settings, hidden codes like the email subject line,
and some other garbage that get in the way of the plain text. Having the
margins change unexpectedly is irritating even with Reveal Codes in WP.
The Edit > Paste > Special > Unformatted Text command does away
with all the formatting garbage, leaving just the text. . . .
P.S. The above linked page also describes some issues with Edit > Paste
Special > Unformatted text that you might want to be aware of.

David,
Shift+Ctrl+V is the shortcut keystroke for Paste Simple. You can also
do Edit, Paste Special, Unformatted text -- which gives a wider range of
Paste options.
Very useful.

Thanks both for the responses. I've used Edit, Paste Special, and I've
always kept an icon for Unformatted text, since I use it constantly. But
Paste Simple isn't among the Paste Special options, and I don't
understand why it isn't there with all the others, since it serves a
different purpose than any of the ones listed. I was glad to find it,
anyway. I'll use the keystroke shortcut you provided, too, though the
icon will usually be the first choice since I'll normally have been
using the mouse to select text to copy and the destination location.
