Is there a keyboard shortcut that will allow switching the active dialog
between, in my case, the Search dialog and the Reference Tools dialog
without closing either dialog box?

Alt+F6, Window Next, may work for you.

Thanks Kenneth. Unfortunately, for me, Alt+F6 switches document windows
but not dialog boxes.

Alt-F6 works as long as one or other Dialog currently has focus.
Ctrl-F gives focus to the Find Dialog. (If you have moved it,
the keystroke also moves it back again.)
