HPLIP on Xandros?

HPLIP on Xandros?
Thu, 28 Jun 2007 08:08:19 +090
Anyone using an HP printer or all-in-one with Xandros?

I installed Debian 4.0 in a separate partition on my Linux box and loved
the way that the HPLIP installer for HP printers found my PSC3210a and
installed it without a bump. So, I got the bright idea that I should
install the same package in my everyday work install of Xandros.

Bad, newbie ... bad, bad, newbie ...

I went to the HP installer page at Sourceforge and attempted to follow
their instructions for a manual install on Xandros.

At the point where I am to install dependencies, the system chokes on
libsnp5-dev which apt can't find.

The message says:

 > Package libsnp5-dev is not available but is referred to by another
 > package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been
 > obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

So I searched and found it at security.debian.org/debian.security but
when I downloaded and installed, I was informed that the package is
broken and that there may be other dependencies.

I checked for the other dependencies and am told that they're all there
and working.

I can't seem to find the right way to configure the address so the
apt-source list can check and find it, either.

I have also tried the install with the same version that is packaged in
the Debian 4 stable .iso (about 1.64 when the latest release on
Sourceforge is 2.7.6) but produced the same result.

What do I do now?

I have just installed HPLIP on Xandros 4 and I followed the manual
installation instructions like you for Xandros but with one variation.

Instead of using apt-get to get all the various dependencies I went
through the list one by one installing them through Xandros Networks.
This took some time but I had no problems with installing the program
thereafter.

[Note there was a problem with running hp-setup after installation which
is solved by using the following "kdesu hp-setup"]

Thanks for the ideas. This looks like it will solve the problems I had
been having. Did you install 2.7.6 or an earlier version?

Someone on another list told me that HPLIP Toolbox is available through
Xandros Networks and I found it there. Then, before I could install it,
I had other problems trying to resolve Japanese character input and
decided to reinstall Xandros on a clean partition rather than continue
to sort through the damage caused by installing two conflicting input
packages (Tables-jp vs. anthy, which I will sort out later).

When I went back to Xandros Networks in the new install to download
HPLIP Toolbox, the reference to a Xandros version is gone. So, I think
I will join you in installing the version from Sourceforge.

This is far more successful with version 4.x that it has been with
previous releases. Seems Xandros has decided that it is easier to
modify less, and therefore have less in the way of maintenance issues
later. Installing packages from the Debian unsupported site in the past
has been hit and miss with regard to compatibility with Xandros.

Xandros is a very conservative distro, where stability is prized over
'latest and greatest.' For that reason, if what you have is working,
you are often best to leave it alone. Upgrading packages in Xandros
that are not on the Xandros Networks site is often fraught with dangers.

Victor,

After comparing notes with someone else who had installed an
intermediate version, I set the sources for Xandros Networks to include
unsupported Debian sources. That was sufficient to allow a full
automatic install of version 1.7.4a (the latest in the 1x series) and it
runs fine right off the command line. I was able to install a Toolbox
icon in the menu, as well.

If you are running v.2.7.6 let me know. I'd like to try an upgrade and
see what happens.
