wp 8.2 on slackware 12

wp 8.2 on slackware 12
Mon, 3 Mar 2008 17:45:28 +1000
Hi,

I've been running wp 8.2 (if that's right - the version which came with
CLOS) quite happily on vectorlinux which is basd on slackware 11

I've installed it on vector linux (based on slackware 12.)

first run got me the segmentation fault.

I found a clue in one of the posts and did:

cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11
ln -s /usr/share/X11/locale locale

this worked! Program ran fine (or seems to run fine) ... except, whenever I
try to go into the preferences/display the program crashes with a
segmentation fault. Any clues as to how I might troubleshoot this?

thanks

I'm a Slackware user as well as a die hard WordPerfect user. I'm using
WP 8.0 for Linux (8.0.0076 6/23/1998). I'm currently using Slackware 11
and have not upgraded to 12 because of the dreaded segment fault I got
when starting WP. What I got was the splash screen and then noting.
However, your simple fix of adding a link seems to work better then
expected.

When using Slackware 11 and earlier versions I have found WP to be more
stable using the xfce vs KDE window manager. I prefer KDE and Slackware
12 seems to be more stable with KDE now. However, I need more time to
check and make sure before upgrading all my computers to Slackware 12.

I have not experienced the segment fault issue you noted when going to the
preferences/display menu. All preferences menus are accessible and
functional. Spell check, grammatik, thesaurus all work. Document,
subdocument expand document work as well. Version control and printing
work too.

I still experience problems trying to import text from my e-mail program
(Thunderbird) into WP and there may be other issues with exporting text.
The 'find' and 'goto' functions (using drop down menus) don't hang as
the did with Slackware 11 and KDE. I definitely need more time to evaluate
but what I have experienced so far looks very, very good.

Thank you for sharing this fix, I can't wait to start playing with it more
tomorrow!!

It seems to work OK for me.

What version of GLibc do you have?

And an unrelated question: can you print?

A segment fault is usually a problem with a SO library. It has been
suggested that instead of using the old: ld.linux.so.1 that you use a
link to your current ld-<version>.so.

Ummm.. good news ... I think.

At least for you. I use Vector Linux on a small & old toshiba laptop, &
wp8
runs like a rocket (barely enough disk space for open office). I've always
had the problem of cutting & pasting from firefox into wp - locks up wp - so

I paste into mousepad and insert the file.

hope it works for you.

My installation was to copy ld.linux.so.something something (i think) into
/lib & run ldconfig
Install the fonts
Install the core program (i had converted the .deb's to .tgz's & then use
installpkg)
correct the ld.so.conf to include /user/lib/wp8/wpbin, run ldconfig &
./wpfi

everyting seems fine & dandy except for the display preferences - can anyone

tell me what preferences that actually includes?

Thanks.

as long as i can use it with confidence, i'm not too concerned if i can't
get to the display properties.

i'm not really au fait with libraries. as far as i can tell glibc is 2.5 -
does that make sense? i linked (ln -s ld-2.5.so ld-linux.so.1) but same
result - crashes under the display properties
