Hello Marty.
Sorry I took so long to get back to this thread.
After two more attempts I finally succeeded in getting the debugger
working.
The unusual aspects of this final test were:
1. I used the exact same VM snapshot to create a clone for each of
my three tests. All that was different was naming the VM itself,
namely, dBaseTest1, dBaseTest2, and dBaseTest3.
2. I wound up not tweaking anything DEP related.
3. Each test generated a new folder in which the new VM clone's
files would reside. Therefore, no residual files from a previous
test clone exist.
4. To be on the safe side, before I created the second and third
test clones, I closed down VM Workstation, reboot the physical box,
and restarted anew.
Perhaps it was just a freaky glitch, but the second try bombed too.
In summary, my tests now report that dBASE v2.61 seems to run fine
inside a VMware virtual machine. The possibilities that this opens
up are exciting and immediately relevant for me. For example, at one
client I am testing in their W2K environment, although deploying in
an XP environment. (Arrgh!) Having a separate and clean VM to model
each situation is very cost effective, and fast.

I'm very glad to hear to you got it working!
Please post if you find any gotchas to watch out for.
