would like to install Visual dbase 5.5, which I use somewhat. I did install
it, but Vista says: "Error initializing ILD01.DLL Cannot start Visual
dbase".
At dbase.com I found manifest files for use with dbase plus, but not with 5.5.
Is there any hope for me to get this running? Is the free upgrade to 5.7 still
available?  Thanks for any help.

Richard,

The manifest files could be a problem, but I think more likely you are
encountering the DEP problem - another Windows security issue. DEP is
explained here:

http://www.goldenstag.net/dbase/

and you can find ways to deal with it here:

http://howto.landisc.com/dep.html

The free upgrade for 5.7 can be found at Keith Chuvala's site. On the
left menu click on "dBASE Stuff":

Richard,
For 5.5 or 5.7 you must have a Win.ini file in your Windows folder with the
following sections

[IDAPI]
DLLPATH=C:\IDAPI
CONFIGFILE01=C:\IDAPI\IDAPI.CFG

[Borland Language Drivers]
LDPath=C:\IDAPI\LANGDRV

[VISUAL dBASE INSTALL]
Location=C:\PROGRA~1\VISUALDB
Runtime55=C:\PROGRA~1\VISUALDB\BIN

Replace the paths to where the files are installed.

Or you could copy all the BDE and runtime to the same working folder.
