When browsing in dBase Plus (set order to ) and changing a fields value in a
particular data file on a particular clients computer all is well until I make
an editing mistake and attempt to rectify the error.
Then I get "...not responding " and dBase freezes.
The problem does not occur on my computer when browsing the same file.
Any clues?

Winston,
Which version of dBASE and which version of Windows is involved? What
kind of tables are they (dBASE tables or from a backend database like
SQL Server or Oracle)? Are the tables on your client's computer or is
your client accessing them over a network? Does it happen with only one
particular table or any table?
Just for your information, in future this type question would be better
in the dbase.programming news group since the dbase.knowledgebase news
group is meant for discussing issues related directly to the
KnowledgeBase (KB) that the dBI company provides on the web site.

dBase 2.6.0.0 b1899
Windows XP Home
dBase table on client's computer.
Happens only with the one table which has only 194 records.
I have deleted the index, reindexed, packed all to no avail.
The programming site in future.

Winston,
This is strange. I can only ventures guesses at this point.
(1) Have the client turn off their anti-virus (disconnect from internet,
too, just to be safe) and then try again. If that solves the problem
then the anti-virus will have a place somewhere to exclude certain types
of files from being scanned and you should exclude .dbf .mdx and .dbt
(2) Although you took the steps to fix a corrupt index there is a small
chance it is a corrupt table. Consider rebuilding the whole table.
(3) There could be a virus on the computer. Be sure the anti-virus is
up-to-date.
(4) Since this is XP, there is a chance that the user is signed in as a
"user" on the computer who does not have sufficient rights to the
folder
where the data resides. Perhaps they have read-only rights and need
something more. Have them sign-in using the Administrator account and
see if that helps.
(5) Do they have another computer upon which they can try this program?
If so, try it on a different computer (a similar as you can manage) and
see if that helps. Perhaps it is a hardware issue. I am not much help
with such things, but you could look at the Device Manager (click
"Start", right-click My Computer, click "Properties", choose
the
"Hardware" tab and check the "Device Manager" button).
(6) I have seen Windows have problems which went away after a
defragmentation and scan of the hard drive. Can't hurt if you're
desparate.
(7) Another act of desparation: do a Windows update to be sure
everything is current. Maybe there is an old video driver or something
like that which is causing the problem.
Just to clarify, is the user really using the dBASE IDE (Command Window)
to BROWSE the table and change it, or are they using a program written
by you? If the latter, is it possible there is a infinite loop (say, in
an error checking routine)? Just a thought.
