In article <tiIOcKW1HHA.352@news-server>, cjhaddad@att.net says...
> I have a Dbase III plus application and have complied it with Dbase 2.0 for
dos complier. We are running it on a novell server from windows workstations.
We have been running it for years with a few minor modifications. The
program has recently increased in size and also added users through a VPN and
windows terminal server . We are using more dbf's and indexs. We are
experiencing strange results like "variable not found" and "data
type mismatches"
and also file locking issues. The odd thing is that sometimes it works and
sometimes it does not. It is a multi-user program with at times up to 25 users.
Is there any limitations to the number of DBO's,DBF's,NDX's and PRG's
that can be in use at one time?

Chris,

I don't think there are any limits to tables or programs which can be
used at any one time. You are likely hitting another issue.

Which version of Novell? Which version(s) of Windows on the client PCs?
Do you recall at what point you started to see these problems?

How many tables do you have? How large (how many rows) in the main table
(s)? How many indexes do these tables have? Are your users mostly
reading the data or are they adding/changing/deleting rows?

I am going to guess that the file locking is either caused by too many
people trying to add/change/delete at one time on a slow network or slow
server -OR- it is an opLocks issue related to Novell (although Novell
has less problems with this than other networks like MS). Another
possibility is the client PCs, especially your Terminal Services users
are not correctly configured for network access. It has been a long time
since I have used those products and I don't recall the exact setting,
but there is something that goes in the config file.

As an aside, try posting your question again in the dbase.programming
news group. The dbase.knowledgebase news group is for issues directly
related to the KnowledgeBase offered by dBI on their web site. More
people will see you question and be able to help if you post in
dbase.programming. When you post your question, provide the details
related to the questions I have asked. We'll pickup the conversation
there.
