Conversion from Windows 98 Application

Conversion from Windows 98 Application
Mon, 04 Feb 2008 16:11:12 -050
I developed a dBase application using Windows 98. I would like to upgrade to a
version that would work on both Windows XP and VISTA. I looked at dBase Plus
and find it difficult to convert. What version of dBase do I need for both XP
and VISTA and what is best way to proceed???

Bob,

Which version of dBASE did you use to make your application? Old
versions of dBASE programs can be run (or made to run) on XP and Vista,
including DOS versions. Have you tried? If so, did you encounter any
problems?

The latest version of dBASE is called dBASE PLUS and the current release
is 2.6.1.3. It runs on Windows XP and Vista.

Thanks for response. Am using Visual dBase V5.7 on a W/98.
Was told some time ago by Vestal that application would not run on XP. Took
your suggestion and tried it. Seems to load and start OK. Need to do more
testing. Great thanks.
Can I load Visual dBase on an XP system to create an application for execution
on a 98 and/or Xp system???

Bob,

You can do that. I have it installed but I have never done development
work with it on my WinXP machine. It does behave oddly when I close it,
but that could be just my machine. I'm sure others here are using WinXP
and Visual dBASE 5.x to make applications.

There will be little things that you will need to adjust to. VdB 5.x
doesn't understand the new long file names (directly). It referenes them
via the shorter DOS-style 8.3 naming convention. VdB 5.x is 16-bit and
cannot take advantage of 32-bit Windows the way 32-bit dBASE PLUS can.
As well, time has moved on. VdB is definitely showing its age. And many
new PCs are coming with Windows Vista. However, anything that you do
make on WinXP will be able to run on Windows98 and can run on other
WinXPs. Do be aware that there are not a lot of Win98 PCs left out
there. <g>

Bob, Geoff
This is not necesarilly so.
Speaking from experience. When developing in the one platform, you must
cross check if it works as you intend on the other platform. I eventually
got tired of this and does not support the 98 platform anymore.
