Have you tried the manifest files? Just to see ...?

I have happily avoided Vista issues so far, but they have now emerged.
In order not to complicate matters in dealing with issues for long-standing
and very remote 'clients', I have stuck with dBase v 2.21 b1755, which is
from the pre-manifest file era.
Having checked out the dBase site guidance on Vista, I see the remedies for
privilege issues are applicable to v 2.6 onwards.
Is there a way of getting v 2.21 (or Runtime v 1755 in fact) to work on
Vista? A new application installation isn't working as it should and, as it
works perfectly well on XP, it looks like a Vista challenge.

I believe the operating system looks for the manifest file, for some of
what is going on.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no - unfortunately (or not) I don't have
Vista at my UK base and the installation in question is in Sudan.
But doesn't the manifest file have to be invoked by the Runtime engine or
something, in which case only the newer versions will do that?
Meanwhile, my contact, having had other Vista problems, is looking at
reverting to XP.
But I still need to get things future-proofed and need to grapple with the
issue. I did buy into v 2.5 and have the v 2.6 patch, but haven't been
using it due to applications out there being based on 2.21.

Mike,
Manifest files are spotted by the operating system, they are not invoked
by your .EXE at all. When you attempt to run an .EXE the operating
system first searches for a matching manifest file (in the same folder
as the .EXE) and loads it first. Whatever is inside the manifest file
guides the OS in how it performs certain things (like security or
providing system "themes" in the program).
Because of this, Ken's suggestion makes sense.
