is there any legal issue I need to beware of ? if I use ODBC to pull out
data from a FoxPro based application and use thet data to create my own
dBase application

Do I need to get an auth. from the company who built this application ?

Thanks!

I would think only if you are using proprietary data that it'd be an issue.

Example,
company A is using a FoxPro based application that purchased from B
company.
now i try to ODBC (Read-only) data from the database and create an dBase
application sell to A
of course, I will have authentication from A to access the database.
my question is,

who owns the database ? A or B ?
Do I have to ask B for premission to read the database ?
is there a website regarding this legal issue ?

Thanks a lot!!

I don't think there's much I could add to Geoff's response, but keep in
mind neither of us are lawyers ...

Eric,

Likely it will depend on who put the DATA into the database. If it is
all Company B DATA then likely it belongs to them. If Company B simply
provided the DATABASE but not the DATA (or not much of it) then it will
be Company A's DATA and Company B's DATABASE. But, that's my non-lawyer
opinion. If you are really concerned you probably should talk to a
lawyer. Sometimes this stuff depends upon which country you are in.
