On the os2hardware Yahoo! group, Ian Manners has just detailed the
settings he uses for his U160 and U320 LSILogic cards. Others have
reported using Adaptec U320 cards.

You mean PCI-X motherboards? Those are indeed difficult to come by --
except perhaps for server motherboards.
Most recent motherboards have one or two PCI-Express slots (not just for
video), and PCI-Express U320 SCSI cards are available.

The successor to SCSI -- for serious computing -- is not SATA but SAS
(= Serial-Attached SCSI). SATA and IDE drives are not just SCSI drives
with different electronics. SCSI drives (and no doubt SAS as well) are
designed to a higher standard and for a more arduous environment. At
least that's what Seagate says.

Hello.
Till now, I have used only SCSI in my PC, but thinking of costs for newer
Harddisks there seems to be no advance anymore for SCSI: U320-Hostadapter
seems not to be supported in OS/2 ( No driver), and my Adaptec U160 begs
for seldom offered PCI-X-Boards. Harddisk in the desktop-level have
reached performance like SCSI at 2003 (10k RPM, approx 4ms accesstime) and
warranties of also 5 years. Newer drives like DVD-Roms and Burners are
only (S)ATA-Devices - no SCSI anymore. Sure, there are Bridges, but 80
Euro per Device has to be add to the bill...
Im seriosly looking at the SATA-systems. But reading Danis readme of
supported Sata-controller gives me a question. There are actual some
AMD-chipsets out there, that uses the so-called SB600 Southbridge. If I
have read right, there are a successor in the pipline: SB700.
Are they supported by Danis atapi driver? Maybe even in native/AHCI mode?
Has anyone a mainboard with AMD 690, or AMD 760/770/790 running with a
Sata-HDD?
For testing purposes, i could lend an AMD690 board, wich runs ok with the
Adaptec plugged in in an PCI32bit-slot, but there ist no Sgn of the SB600
sata-controller. Maybe im doing something wrong?
PCI.exe recognizes this, the Bios shows the attached harddisk, the
SATA-controller runs in ATA-mode.. still no luck.
Over there in Windows XP and Linux if will recognized, so its not a
hardware problem.
Or should I stay away from the AMD-Chipsets, going to nvidia (linke now)?
Regards Andy P.
P:S: Danis atapi driver are a excellent piece of software as i can see on
my laptop. This is a bright shining example, how this kind of software has
to be written. Thanks Dani.

There is one for Adaptec U320 hosts listed in eCS 1.2MR at least (I
wonder where I could find a PCI-e card for a *nice* price, though...).

It fits into a "standard" PCI socket (at least in my machine). The
64bit
part is just not used.

ACARD (at least?) provides SCSI-to-SATA bridges. This allows to connect
SATA HDD (SATA RAID device) or CD/DVD drives to a SCSI bus.

Sure. But we (still) have the choice.

Whereas staying with SCSI using bridges doesn't give you too many
questions, apart from a "financial" point of view, of course. (;-)

I second that.

Am I entitled to the offer, even though I haven't brought any answer?
Have a nice day.

Thanks - I'll send the Wife to the kitchen to make a cup now ;-)
Reading the Danis506.doc the AMD SB600 does not seem to get mentioned.
Best advice I can give regarding that chipset - and SB700 - is to
contact Dani and ask politely about support.
With regard to changing from scsi to sata2: I changed from u160 to sata2
around 8 months ago and have no cause for complaint. I do suspect that
sata2 drives may not last as long as scsi but, being lots cheaper, you
can afford any extra disk or 2 to store backups on :-)

I think I read somewhere that the SB600 uses AHCI; I also read somewhere
else, within the ecs ngs, that installation of eCS2.0RC(?) failed until
the op had set BIOS option regarding AHCI to Compatability.
You may want to Google for SB600 specs and search these ngs for
references to AHCI.
